Pescasseroli sits in the heart of the central Apennines, about 165 km — roughly 2 to 2.5 hours — from Rome. It is well connected, but the final stretch up into the mountains takes a little planning. Below you will find three ways to reach the village: a dedicated conference shuttle, your own car, or public transport. At the end you will also find how to get from Rome’s airports into the city, in case you are stopping there first.

Where to fly. Most international participants will land at Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” (FCO), Italy’s main airport (~176 km, about 2h 30 by car). Low-cost flights from within Europe may also use Rome Ciampino (CIA) or Abruzzo Airport – Pescara (PSR), which is in fact the closest airport to the Park (about 1 h 30 by car).

Important — weekend services are very limited

On Saturdays and Sundays there is only one public bus from Avezzano to Pescasseroli (13:20), and no return bus at all from Pescasseroli to Avezzano. As the conference begins on Sunday 20 September and many participants will leave on Saturday 26 September, public transport may not be a workable option for weekend arrivals or departures. For those days we strongly recommend the conference shuttle or your own car.

1. Conference shuttle (easiest, door to door)

The conference organisation offers a shuttle between Rome Fiumicino Airport and Pescasseroli, at participants’ own expense. It is the simplest option — and the safest choice for arrivals and departures over the weekend, when public transport to and from the village is very limited (see the note further down).

Costs and schedules will be published at a later stage.

Please note: the shuttle departs from Rome Fiumicino Airport, not from the city centre. If you are staying in central Rome, travel out to Fiumicino first (see “From Rome’s airports to the city” below) and board the shuttle there.

2. By car (most flexible)

A car is by far the most flexible way to reach Pescasseroli and to explore the Park during your stay. From Rome, take the A24/A25 motorway (Autostrada dei Parchi) towards Pescara, then the SS83 “Marsicana” road into the Park. The drive is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Fiumicino. Roads are generally well maintained and traffic is light.

You can rent a car at Fiumicino, Ciampino and Pescara airports from the usual companies (Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar and others).

One request: once inside the Park, please drive slowly, especially at dawn and dusk. These roads cross the territory of the Marsican brown bear and much other wildlife — a few minutes of patience can save a life.

3. By public transport (via Avezzano)

Always double-check schedules. Bus and train timetables can change, and TuaAbruzzo only displays journeys up to 15 days before the travel date.

There is no direct public connection between Rome and Pescasseroli. The journey is always made in two steps, changing in the town of Avezzano.
