Invited Talk: IT06 - The challenging conservation of the brown bear in Trentino - Italian Alps: a balance 25 years after the reintroduction

Trentino and the surrounding central Alps are home to one isolated bear population numbering around 120 individuals.
A huge effort in terms of conservation and management has been made in the last 25 years, after the reintroduction, in terms of monitoring, damages prevention, emergencies management, personnel training, networking and communication.
Such an effort led to a constant positive growth trend of the population, but in the meantime a very high level of conflicts with humans was reached.
The real meaning of coexistence and the compromises that arise living with bears in the most densely populated mountains in Europe are the main issues to be addressed now and in the next decades.
