OR45 - Taking stock of the evidence: where are we on the path to recovery of the giant panda?

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a prominent global example of species recovery supported by long-term ecological research, policy, and landscape-scale conservation planning. Drawing on decades of population surveys, habitat monitoring, and molecular census approaches, this presentation synthesizes lessons learned from panda conservation science and outlines priorities for the future. Recent analyses combining national survey data with fecal DNA–based population estimates reveal strong agreement between methods while suggesting earlier surveys underestimated population size in dense populations. Concurrently, giant pandas have experienced measurable range expansion over the past three decades, particularly in Sichuan Province, driven by increasing forest cover, protected area establishment, and improvements in habitat connectivity. Protected areas now encompass roughly 72% of panda habitat, supported by complementary policies such as logging bans and ecological compensation programs. Evidence indicates that ecological factors—especially habitat quality, forest recovery, and landscape connectivity—are the strongest predictors of population growth. Restoration of secondary forests and the establishment of dispersal corridors have increased gene flow and reduced isolation among populations. Despite these gains, key threats persist, including habitat fragmentation affecting small populations, livestock encroachment, infrastructure development, and climate change, whose impacts remain uncertain across models and emission scenarios. We highlight several ingredients for successful conservation: sustained government commitment, science-based adaptive management, habitat restoration at landscape scales, and integration of policy with ecological research. Future directions will need to emphasize the nature of coupled natural and human systems, working with local communities to promote human livelihoods and biodiversity conservation in concert.
