LBSC01 - The LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors Project: Creating 16 Bear Smart Corridors in the Central Apennines

Mario CipolloneMain Venue

The Marsican brown bear exists as a small relict population in the Central Apennines - one of the most threatened populations in the world. Human-caused mortality, whether intentional or accidental, is the primary threat, often linked to conflicts arising from damage to agricultural and livestock activities. The LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors project operates within the ecological corridors connecting the bear's main range areas. By adopting the "Bear-Smart" approach - introduced to Italy from North America following experience exchanges - the project aims to improve habitat quality and social acceptance of the species, reduce human-bear conflicts, and support local socio-economic development.
