Participatory processes, like Bear-Smart Communities (BSCs), have been supported by LIFE projects to offer the opportunity for sustained stakeholder engagement and interaction. However, monitoring stakeholder interaction in such processes has been rather scarcely documented and in an unsystematic manner. In the frame of LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors, we developed and pilot implemented a coding scheme based on the collaborative framework of Emerson et al. (2012). We analyzed the minutes of 11 BSCs in Italy and Greece (37 meetings, overall). We coded 1532 utterances voiced by participants (362 participants; 11 stakeholder groups). The most vocal stakeholder groups were environmental non-governmental organizations, followed by protected area authorities and prefectures. Stockbreeders, foresters, entrepreneurs/employees in tourism and local association featured with intermediate numbers of utterances. Despite differences in the absolute number of utterances, the frequency of utterances across the overarching categories of the coding scheme seemed to follow a similar pattern in all stakeholder groups. We will present the results of a correlational analysis showcasing how the system context surrounding BSCs and drivers of the process may influence collaborative dynamics between stakeholders, as well as how such collaborative dynamics, when put in motion, may trigger collaborative outcomes.
